Experienced producers still stumble when they land somewhere new. Korea has its own rhythms, etiquette and bureaucracy, and the gap between expectation and reality can be wide. These are the errors that come up again and again, along with simple ways to avoid them.

Mistake: Booking Flights Before Access Is Confirmed

Excitement often leads teams to buy tickets while key interviews remain only “possible.” If a contributor then withdraws, the whole trip has to be rebuilt around a weaker story, or abandoned altogether.

Lock the essential access first, or build flexibility into the travel dates. A changed flight costs far less than a week of expensive crew with nothing meaningful to film, and your commissioner will certainly prefer the cheaper lesson.

Mistake: Assuming English Will Carry You

Seoul is modern and connected, yet many contributors are far more open in Korean. Even confident English speakers can hold back nuance, humour and emotion when they are speaking a second language on camera.

Bring an interpreter or a bilingual producer so people can express themselves fully. The quality of the answers improves dramatically, and contributors feel respected rather than tested, which changes the whole mood of the interview.

Mistake: Ignoring Hierarchy and Etiquette

Greetings, seating, business cards and the order in which people speak all carry meaning in Korean settings. Blunders are rarely fatal, but they can quietly cool a warm conversation before it properly begins.

A short cultural briefing from your local team prevents most of this. People appreciate visitors who have clearly made an effort, and that goodwill often translates into longer interviews and easier access to colleagues.

Mistake: Treating Permits as an Afterthought

Many first-time visitors only discover on location that filming needs permission. A security guard with a clipboard can end a shoot in seconds, and the embarrassment can linger with the venue for years.

If you plan to hire a fixer in South Korea, involve them in permissions from the start, not after problems appear. Early requests are polite, predictable and far more likely to receive a friendly yes.

Mistake: Overpacking the Schedule

Travel across Seoul can take far longer than a map suggests, particularly at rush hour. Teams that plan six scenes a day often finish two, and the remaining four become expensive regrets.

Build in buffers for traffic, setup, lunch and the unexpected. A realistic plan looks more professional than an ambitious one that collapses by Wednesday, and crews perform better when they are not racing the clock constantly.

Mistake: Underestimating Sensitive Subjects

Some topics, from politics to mental health, call for particular care in Korea. A careless question can shut down a conversation or embarrass a contributor in front of colleagues and family.

An experienced documentary fixer South Korea crews respect will advise on framing, wording, and who should ask which questions. That guidance protects contributors, and it also protects the integrity of your film.

Mistake: Leaving Data Backup Until Later

Long travel days leave everyone exhausted, and exhausted crews skip dull tasks. Yet one lost card or corrupted drive can erase a key interview that can never be recreated.

Copy footage twice every evening, before dinner and before anything else. Treat it as part of the shoot, not an optional extra, and label drives clearly so tomorrow’s tired version of you cannot make an error.

Mistake: Forgetting the Contributor’s Perspective

Foreign teams sometimes arrive with a firm story in mind and treat contributors as props. People notice quickly, and trust disappears long before the interview ends.

Explain the project honestly, share what will happen to the footage, and invite questions. Contributors who feel respected speak more freely, and the extra ten minutes at the start often decides the quality of the final scene.

Mistake: Skipping a Small Test Shoot

Teams in a hurry go straight to the biggest scene, only to discover a faulty cable, a noisy air conditioner or an unexpected power cut. By then, the contributor is seated and waiting.

A short test earlier in the trip reveals these problems when they are still cheap to solve. Even a quarter of an hour with the camera and microphones can protect the most important interview of the week.

Conclusion

None of these errors is unusual. They happen because new places are genuinely difficult to read from the outside, and no amount of desk research replaces local judgement.
